  1. We’ll have a better answer after Oliveira vs. Islam. This stuff is always so premature, if Oliveira loses to Islam then all this Charles Oliveira is the LW GOAT fades away, just like what happened to Woodley before/after the Usman fight.

  2. MMA is totally the sport of “what have you done for me lately.”

With how volatile the fight game is, fighters are constantly moving up or down the ladder especially in the eyes of fans and most definitely with power players like Dana White.

Before social media there was really only obscure forums where hardcores would debate endlessly about who’s hot and not for months on end. Now that sort of debate and reaction is happening in real time on Twitter and etc with a huge pool including casuals.

  3. Hard to make a fight not seem boring when you are literally imposing your will on someone the entire time and dragging their exhausted body all around the octagon.

  4. People really already forgot about khabib, Watch and see how johnson, barboza, McGregor, gaethje were pressured, I legit got claustrophobic watching that.

To answer the main point, I’m sure Charles has boring losses but he has a million fights to whatever. I can say for certain he has losses and khabib doesnt.

  5. Khabib will probably be regarded similarly to Shaq in his total dominance during his prime. His lack of activity and retiring early will make it easier for other fighters to surpass his record and probably goat status.

  6. I have a feeling Khabib will forever have this nonsense thrown his way because of how early he retired, but I’ll never forget how he quite literally broke his opponents mentally like no fighter I’ve ever seen. That’s the difference. Khabib was boring at times because he was *so* dominant.

  7. I just don’t see it.He gets dropped all the time,8 losses.Lets see how it goes against Islam, assuming he actually accepts that fight since he’s been talking about Conor and Nate and whoever except for Islam

  8. I get where he is coming from, but Khabib was totally dominate in his fights. All of that said, he lacks title defenses and spent a lot of time not fighting. Charles already has three defenses, even though one technically doesn’t count. He’s dispatched of the same opponents fast than Khabib, but that doesn’t really matter. Khabib might be the GOAT right now, but not for long. His lack of activity will hurt his legacy, he was champ for a long time to only have three title defenses. Other than his record of literal cans, the biggest thing hurting Khabib was his lack of activity. If Charles beats Islam, Khabib isn’t the GOAT and it would be tough to ever argue that he was after that.

Edit: Sorry, Charles has two defenses technically. Point still stands about beating Islam though.

  9. It’s all hypothetical at this point. But regardless of how exciting Charles is, I still think he gets absolutely run over by Khabib.

  10. One of the most annoying things about MMA is how many fighters are talked about as the “GOAT.” I don’t know about anyone else, but for me it just devalues the term when it feels like practically every current belt holder is being labelled the greatest of all time. It probably has to do with the relative newness of the sport, but still, it would be like NBA fans saying that Jokic is the GOAT because he’s the current league MVP. Don’t get me wrong, I like Charles, but for Christ sake he only just recently won the title and he’s already being discussed as the best light weight EVER? Come on. I know this is part of the UFC’s marketing strategy and all but it just surprises me how many fans buy into it.

  11. Olivera is great and is on a pretty epic run, but he doesn’t feel as dominant as Khabib. He has had some close calls and I don’t think anyone would have been majorly surprised if he lost to Poirier or Gaethje or if he loses his next fight to the next contender. Khabib on the other hand, absolutely murdered the top of the division.

  12. As a fan of grappling I always loved Khabib fights because it let me see a higher achievable level and maybe catch some pointers in positioning and traps but to each it’s own.

I honestly think Khabib would beat Charlie Olives in a match, it would be close though. Closer than anyone ever

  13. lol no. Is recency bias such huge thing that people already forgot? Olivera has shown a lot of skill and especially a lot of heart in his fights. But he hasn’t shown even close to the level of dominance as Khabib. He gets hurt in every fight. Khabib was so dominant that a MJ landing a single punch became a huge deal and a talking point.

  14. MMA really needs to stop this thing where the latest champion is the GOAT.

You idiots were saying Woodley was the GOAT during his run.

Also, I’m not even a Khabib fan, but Charles gets dropped and beat up in every fight. It makes for exciting fights, but it also means he’s not the GOAT.

I think a lot of people are confusing his exciting fights with actual dominance. Getting dropped in every fight means you are not GOAT level.

Finally, Khabib’s resume is a little thin on its own. Not his fault as he can only fight the guys they put in front of him. But very few legends on that list. Connor is probably his biggest name win, and Connor was already slacking off by then and partying all night.

  15. The biggest difference to me is Charles has been in trouble in all of his title fights. Khabib never even got close to struggling with any of the similar opponents

  16. It’s not about who has the most exciting fights. In fact when you’re as dominant as Khabib was, it can be more difficult to have exciting fights. That being said I thought his fights were excellent more times than not.

It’s also a ridiculous statement to say Khabib couldn’t strike. It might not have been the best aspect of his game, but McGregor was considered an elite striker and Khabib out-classed him on the feet. He just had no reason to stay there when he could easily dominate his opponents everywhere else.

It’s just a stupid take. Olives is a great fighter, and has an incredible heart, but his wins against both Garth and Dustin were razor thin and could have gone either way. Khabib walked through everyone, including the best competition Olives had fought. It’s kind of lame how people’s recency bias blinds them from how dominant he was.

  17. To say Oliviera is the GOAT right now is so insane to me. Khabib had:

    1.) A better record

    2.) More title defenses

    3.) Took much less damage

So, to think Oliviera is the current GOAT just makes me wonder what the hell someone is even basing this on.

The only things Charles has over Khabib are stuff like total UFC finishes and wins. But those are just because he fought longer.
