How has nobody said it? It’s quite obvious. The felony was dropped due to overwhelming evidence that he didn’t plan the altercation. Someone just got too close.

The couple claims Sonnen was intoxicated, wearing bloody clothes, and “uttering unintelligible noises.” Sonnen allegedly confronted Christopher and “proceeded to viciously attack Dr. Stellpflug, punching him multiple times in the head with a closed fist” and then choking him. Sonnen is also accused of punching Julie in the face multiple times with an open fist.”

One of the YouTube MMA channels outlined the police report. It’s actually pretty bad when you read the police version. BTW, the police version is just what the police witnessed, not the victim’s lawsuit claims. So that should be mostly factual.
Chael and his wife are both claiming they took sleeping pills and have no recollection of anything. So that’s clearly a defense strategy. If he was acting in self defense or was denying the allegations, he wouldn’t’ pretend to have been drugged out.
This is pretty common and does not in any way mean Chael is innocent. A felony is much harder to prosecute than a misdemeanor charge.
It’s why you typically see murder charges bumped down from first degree to second or third and sometimes even manslaughter.
