  1. Agree. Not allowing knees to a grounded opponent changes a lot. There’s a lot of positions and techniques that aren’t realistic if you allow knees. I like mma to be as close to a real fight as possible without allowing ridiculous stuff like biting, eye poking, nut shots. But there is nothing ridiculous about knees to a grounded opponent.

  2. FWIW: Grounded should be defined as having at least one hand on the ground. On your knees with both hands up like Sterling was? You can block a knee or a kick, at least partially.

  3. I always thought they were gonna add them in 09-10 when American wrestlers and LNP seemed to dominate the mma meta. Knees to grounded opponents are a strong counter to wrestlers cause it makes a failed takedown shoot a super dangerous event.

At this point I never see it happening.

  4. I hate that people can use position to stall the fight like Aljo was definitely doing but I do quite like the separation of certain strikes when grounded, I think maybe because I genuinely like watching high level grappling and allowing knees and soccer kicks would detract from that

Not opposed to them, didn’t ruin Pride or even ONE (when they have legit fights on) but I just like the separation

  5. To me it’s one of those archaic rules of MMA that because it looks bad or had a bad rep back in the day will never be changed same with 6-12 elbows

Does it need to be changed absolutely

  6. Disagree, it’s a medical and body mechanics issue. When a fighter receives a blow to the head their whole body can move to reduce how much the brain bounces around in the skull. When they are grounded… not so much. Combined with the power in kicks and knees, the ban significantly lowers the risk of brain damage to fighters. This is a sport, more civilized than boxing in my opinion due to rules like these. Also these kinds of rules help keep MMA from being banned, because even now the sport is still under attack. If you care about the sport, please care about the fighters.

  7. He’s right. Stalling is dumb and the entire concept of being able to “ground” yourself in a fight so that you can’t get hit is stupid. It takes away from it being a real “fight”.

However I guess seeing people get kneed execution style might not be great for a Disney owned company. But the counter would be Sterling wouldn’t have stayed in that position had the grounded opponent rule not being in existence.

Those are and always have been my thoughts prior to Saturday night. Yan knew the rules and deserved to lose the belt (although I would argue it should just be a vacated belt, don’t agree with giving it to Sterling but whatever).

  8. That first sentence makes me think he thought Sterling was doing this, stalling. I could see
I do believe knees to a grounded opponent should be legal, as well as soccer kicks and 6-12 elbows. Not because of “MmA Is As ClOsE tO a ReAl FiGht…” but because it is a natural progression from the position. If you are being held against the cage while someone is below your waist trying to take you down in a single leg, the thing to do (instinctively) is throw a downward elbow. If you are in north south position or in the position Yan found himself in with Sterling, the thing to do is throw a knee.
I do not think these techniques are any more dangerous than what we have now. No one (that I know of) had died or been seriously injured in pride because of these, but we did have some weird outcomes, like Vovchanchyn getting DQd vs Mark Kerr for it in a fight where he should have won, as well as what happened Saturday.

  9. Absolutely not. Bad G&P is one thing, but if a guy gets Yamasaki’d and eats 5 knees to the head he could never fight again. Good recipe to see someone die in the octagon.

  10. Maybe they should be allowed but they aren’t. On the one hand Alja’s strategy was a bit contrived and unnatural in a fight. On the other hand it can be hard to know when a guy goes limp when you are hitting him with knees from the bottom and those strikes carry such power. Bottom line is Yan broke one of the few rules and paid the price.

  11. Right, lets just set the SPORT back 20 years. I don’t agree at all. MMA is fine the way it is, the problem (in UFC) is the ranking system seems to matter and less with every passing year recently.

  12. Turning the back of your head to your opponent and covering the side also stalls the fight because back-head strikes are illegal, but if they were allowed then several fighters could have died by now from spinal damage. There has to be nuance – trapping someone’s head in the corner of the cage before unloading knees could be absolutely lethal.
